Reflections on Light

“Let there be light!”

From out of nothing, from a void of deep blackness, God conjured up light – the full spectrum. Specks of rainbow that dance through a prism. The golden glow which floats over dusty cornfields. Fiery red to streak across the clouds above a setting sun. The deep blue of mid-winter night. A playful celebration of the Master Artist’s infinite creativity, painted in the colours of the universe. (Genesis 1:3)

A world without God is dark and empty. People, like earwigs, love darkness rather than light. The light shows up the dirt of our evilness. We run from light, and because God is light, we run from God. (John 3:19, 1 John 1:5)

Jesus, the true light, stepped into our shadowy world. He far outshone our darkness. “I’m the light of the world, the life-light. Follow me, and I’ll walk you along the well-lit path.” As we follow him and get to know him, God says “let there be light!” and our hearts are flooded with supernatural brightness. Through Jesus, we move from night to day. (John 1:9, 5, 8:12, 12:46, 2 Corinthians 4:6, 1 Thessalonians 5:5)

We’re children of the Light, children of God. So let’s live it. Let’s glow. Jesus is the light of the world, he gets inside us and we become the light of the world. You can’t hide a city on a hill. You don’t put a lamp under a bed. Lights are supposed to shine. Let your light shine. When people see supernatural light, they start looking for a supernatural source. You’re a bright neon arrow pointing to the Father. Don’t try to hide it. (Psalm 27:1, Ephesians 5:8, Matthew 5:14-16)

illuminating lights under my skin, radiation so intoxicating burning within… they see us coming from miles away, there’s no hiding, no denying, ‘cause we’re not ashamed… we’re gonna show you something real, like a city on a hill, we’re gonna glow, glow, glow
